Colour me Friday – How to Wear Yellow

Yellow, that notoriously-avoided-by-brunettes shade, is predicted to be BIG this year, and has been widely seen in recent fashion weeks – both S/S 2015 and A/W 2015. It was on tops, coats, skirts and scarves at J. Crew; shoes, jewellery and dresses at Mary Katrantzou; coats and bags at Michael Kors; and a bit bonkers at Vivienne Westwood.

Great – but how do I, as a normal human (brunette), wear yellow? I tend to avoid it like the plague because it -well – makes me look like I have the plague. OK, not the plague, but as I have olive skin I’ve always thought it would make me look sallow and sickly. Well, following my triumph with one of my new year’s resolutions last year – “try yellow eyeshadow” (for which I can heartily recommend Clarins Sunny Yellow) – the key for me will be to avoid what I would describe as “1980s C&A pale pastel lemon” (memories of a bargain sale oversized-and-not-in-a-good-way pale lemon blouson ski jacket still haunt me).

Yves Klein – Cheval (D 12), ca. 1949

Instead I’m going to go for strong, bold yellows, in the style of Yves Klein; and remember, whilst colour blocking is still huge, there are more subtle ways to go (shoes, bags, jewellery, print). Here’s some (hopefully non-sickly) ideas:

hmprod (1)
Textured jacket, H&M £29.99
topshop jumper
Textured Fisherman Knit Jumper, Topshop £36.00
braclet topshop
Metal Bar Cuff Bracelet, Topshop £14.50

Mustard contrast panel vest, Evans £28
dp shoes deben
Yellow and black pointed pump shoes, Dorothy Perkins £14.40

  1. I have nothing against yellow but if you were to look into my closet, you can probably find only less than 5 article of clothings that is yellow. One I never had the chance to wear and now can’t fit. And the other is a shell that I like to pair with something green, black or white. All in all, yellow is a good color, but it’s something I liked better when it’s mixed with contrasting/comparable colors and not as a solid color.
