Hello! Today I finally finished upcycling my vintage 1960’s medicine cabinet! Did I need an extremely heavy 1960’s medicine cabinet in grubby condition? Err.. probably not. Did I want it? Yes. Can I imagine how cool, awesome and useful it might be once I upcycle it (if I don’t mess it up)? Hell yeah. Challenge accepted. Continue reading Vintage Medicine Cabinet Upcycle

Five Bold Wallpaper Choices
Fortune favours the brave – and after years of dreaming and working, we are in the final stages of buying a beautiful house. Bizarrely, the two things which I seem to be excited about at the moment are 1) the round, glass-topped, 1970s coffee table I have stored in the attic (which I salvaged from our former MD’s office when my company moved buildings); now it can finally have a suitable home of it’s own (open plan kitchen/diner/living room + small separate lounge = two coffee tables needed, yay!). 2) I can finally have the downstairs loo of my dreams – by which I mean dark, dramatic wallpaper (funny thing to aspire to, I know – but hey, read the title of my blog). Hmm, which to choose? All advice welcome 🙂

Inspiring Musicians: Tyler Lyle
Hi! Just wanted to share this gorgeous song by Tyler Lyle – “Werewolf”. I discovered Tyler a couple of years ago when his song “I will follow love all the way home“ was featured on one of my favourite TV shows (sadly now ended) – Private Practice. I instantly fell in love with the song and downloaded his beautiful 2011 album “The Golden Age and the Silver Girl,” which was released entirely through Bandcamp.
If you haven’t yet heard of Tyler, he has an indie-folk-with-a-bit-of-country style, and writes beautiful, heartfelt lyrics that can make you feel like you experienced the things he’s writing about along with him, or else can easily relate it back to your own experiences. He is currently at work on a new full length album titled “the Native Genius of Desert Plants,” funded via Pledge Music, which I’ve been privileged to contribute to. In terms of the album name, Tyler explains that “The native genius of desert plants is that they can survive a long time without water. It’s been three years and six months since my last album. That feels long enough.”
Vintage Headboard Upcycle
It has bugged me for ages that our double divan bed doesn’t have a headboard (I know, first world problems, right?). I had never really seen one that I loved, was of good quality and could afford, and I really love one-off pieces, so I decided to see if I could upcycle one as an experiment…
Step 1 – Find a headboard! If, like me, you’re fairly new to upcycling, you don’t want to spend much (or any) money on your headboard. Unless you plan on wrestling one away from your sleeping granny, try Freecycle or Freegle. Failing that, Ebay or your local charity/thrift furniture stores. I got mine on the Newcastle Freecycle website. As a special lucky bonus, the couple who were giving it away had a pick-up truck, some free time and a lot of kindness, and delivered it to my house for free. It’s a 1950’s wood and velvetine French regency style headboard in peach and white, which, on first appearance, Chandler from Friends would probably describe as “a Reject from the Liberace House of Crap”. However, closer inspection reveals that it’s in great condition with high quality materials and workmanship. Perfect for my upcycling experiment. Continue reading Vintage Headboard Upcycle
Top Five Interior Design Destinations
One of my favourite things to do when I have the odd five minutes (which can quickly turn into half an hour…OK, an hour) is to have a surf for interior design inspiration. I love the infinite possibilities and the fact that every new search brings up fresh ideas, such as how to rearrange clutter to become more artful and coordinated. I see this clutter re-arranging not as a battle between chaos and order, but as a mindfulness activity… so (I’m really stretching it out here) all that surfing for inspiration is actually good for my state of mind. In no particular order, here’s my top five picks for some interior design inspo. Continue reading Top Five Interior Design Destinations
