Things I found in the attic… Vintage Books for Girls

On a recent trip back to my parents farmhouse, I finally decided (after being assured that it was now probably a rat-free zone) to brave the attic – an activity I had been both looking forward to and dreading for years. What treasures would I find? And would they all have been eaten by rats?

The answer is – some treasures (depending on your definition of treasures), and some rat damage. I managed to salvage a fair amount with the help of one brave sister and our mum shouting instructions from below. Amongst the salvage were these beautiful vintage books for girls – had they belonged to my mum? My grandmother? Continue reading Things I found in the attic… Vintage Books for Girls

Copper Spray Paint Superhero!

zigzgag

A couple of months ago I did a Colour me Friday post on Copper Interior Design – and since then, I’ve become a little obsessed with it. But I’m currently buying a house, and don’t have any spare cash – What’s a girl to do? So I decided to combine thriftiness and a good old pre-move clearout to see if I could become a copper spray paint superhero…

My weekend with Richard

A car park in Leicester, in the English Midlands, may not seem like the obvious inspiration for a weekend break – but this weekend, it could well be one of the most interesting places to be in the UK. Let me hand over to my friend Jen at Adventures in Ink to explain…

I may have been neglecting my blog for a while, sadly, but no more!

I am so excited that this weekend is finally here – my weekend with Richard (III, for those who weren’t aware of my obsession). When it was announced that they had found Richard III’s body in that famous Leicester car-park, I knew I had to visit, and so I did, last August, for what I imagined would be the only time…

A very excited me, by a certain excavated parking space... A very excited me, by a certain excavated parking space…

And then, I had a very lucky day in December – having entered the public ballot, I was delighted to receive an invite to the service of Compline on Sunday 22nd March. I, of course, said yes.

So here we are, two sleeps from my weekend in Leicester, and I felt obliged to warn you that there may be a lot of random uploads and…

Weekender: Norfolk, England

I grew up in Norfolk, so I am more than slightly biased, but there’s no denying that it’s an amazing weekend destination. It’s a land of flat and gently rolling barley fields and poppies, home to the Bowie-name-checked Norfolk Broads, endless miles of golden sandy beaches, flint houses, thatched cottages, windmills, ancient churches, village greens and country pubs.

Poppyland

Norfolk is a county that has no motorways, gets the best of the British summer sun, and has produced national treasures as diverse as Admiral Lord Nelson, Stephen Fry and Alan Partridge. The pace of life is slow and gentle, and it sometimes feels like not much has changed since the 1950’s. Continue reading Weekender: Norfolk, England

Colour me Friday: Red Nose Day

Yippee! It’s Red Nose Day! For any non-UK readers who haven’t heard of it before, it’s an awesome day of fun to raise money for Comic Relief. the money raised is spent to transform the lives of millions of people, both at home in the UK and across Africa, and is much beloved by us Brits. Comic Relief alternates every other year with Sport Relief, which raises money for the same good causes, but with less custard pies and more hard graft. Basically, it doesn’t matter what you do, just do something funny for money! If you can’t do, watch Comic Relief all of Friday evening on the BBC, and give some money! Vintage Headboard Upcycle

It has bugged me for ages that our double divan bed doesn’t have a headboard (I know, first world problems, right?). I had never really seen one that I loved, was of good quality and could afford, and I really love one-off pieces, so I decided to see if I could upcycle one as an experiment…

Step 1 – Find a headboard! If, like me, you’re fairly new to upcycling, you don’t want to spend  much (or any) money on your headboard. Unless you plan on wrestling one away from your sleeping granny, try Freecycle or Freegle. Failing that, Ebay or your local charity/thrift furniture stores. I got mine on the Newcastle Freecycle website. As a special lucky bonus, the couple who were giving it away had a pick-up truck, some free time and a lot of kindness, and delivered it to my house for free. It’s a 1950’s wood and velvetine French regency style headboard in peach and white, which, on first appearance, Chandler from Friends would probably describe as “a Reject from the Liberace House of Crap”. However, closer inspection reveals that it’s in great condition with high quality materials and workmanship. Perfect for my upcycling experiment. Continue reading Vintage Headboard Upcycle

Colour Me Friday: #Colour Me March

The lovely people at the etail PR Blogger Network are holding a completion to win a pair of tickets to Cheltenham Races Ladies Day on 11th March – and given that the competition is called #ColourMeMarch, what could be better than for this week’s Colour Me Friday to be my competition entry, and at the same time provide a little colour inspiration! The look is inspired by the Lana Del Rey song “off to the Races”. Here goes, wish me luck!
